Today was an amazing day at Northwest Haiti Christian Mission!!! There were groups of us who served off-campus and groups who served on-campus, but everyone was blessed. Here are some of the experiences that MUST be highlighted:
St. Louis du Nord – This local town is full of kids who are curious and so very friendly! A couple of teams had the opportunity to enter the community by walking into the courtyard outside the mission where the kids begged us for money to make personalized bracelets. The kids were persistent and after making quite a few bracelets, they decided to just hang out with us, play some football & soccer, learn our names, and tell us how much they love us. It was so touching. Some of the teams also had a chance to walk through the town’s dirty, hole-filled gravel roads lined with trash in order to pray with men in the local jail and take meals to the gran moun – the elderly who need meals provided to them since their families can no longer provide for them due to the poverty level. During this walking tour of St. Louis du Nord, we saw homes, many of which are more like shacks with corrugated metal walls & roofs, and an open-air market with everything from live crabs and pig’s feet to garlic and carrots. Occasionally, one of the friendly Haitian children watching us pass by would pinch our arms or just poke us. They were all smiling and giving us high-fives. And it was so neat to have our Haitian friends from the courtyard we visited earlier in the day accompany us the entire time we were walking, holding our hands and giving us hugs. These kids just love to be loved!
Tomorrow will prove to be a great day as well. Teams are already scheduled to head to Tortuga Island to continue work setting up a sister church in Carenage which will be supported by an American church from Evansville, Indiana. VBS programs will be held there as well. Another team is heading to a prison in Port-de-Paix where they will minister to and provide medical assistance for prisoners. God has been protecting us and will continue to give us divine appointments as we work together in Haiti. We can’t wait to see what He will do next! Here we are…use us.
