Love and Joy

So today was our first full day in Haiti, and already, my heart and mind are so full. God has shown me so much about love and joy. The love of the people at the mission, as we saw on our tour, is just amazing. The number of lives that the missionaries reach every day is truly a blessing to the people of Haiti. Not only that, but I felt more love today from perfect strangers than I do every day in the states. One of the things we did today was to go to the nutrition center area of the mission and hand out dresses and other clothes to the townspeople. The love and appreciation on their faces and in their hands as they held ours was absolutely amazing. I only wish we had had more to give out, but I know each child that we helped is one more than before. Another thing we did today was hut to hut evangelism. Now I was really nervous about this, but I knew that the point of this, and what God was trying to do in all of us was to stretch our comfort and faith. The actual evangelism was a great experience, but what I truly loved was all of the children that greeted us with open hearts and hands. Many of them walked the whole way with us, and I felt such a connection, even though we couldn’t verbally communicate all that much, their joy and the fact that they called us “my friend” brought tears to my eyes. The other amazing miracle of this part of the day was that my husband, who generally strongly dislikes speaking in front of people, made a connection with a young boy, and went into his home and reached out to his family. Like I said, the amount that God has done already in our first day astounds me. He is doing marvelous things here in Haiti and at the Mission. The real high of my day is Son Son, and boy that befriended me while we were carrying out the Meals on Heels program. He knew a fair amount of English, which was great, and his heart was so big. What started out as him wanting to sell me a bracelet turned into a great walk together, during which we talked about how we are both going to the same church on Sunday. Later, he again asked if I went to church, and when I said yes, he asked if I would pray to Jesus for him tonight. This is what it’s all about really, making connections and seeing God work here in Haiti. That boy was so joyful and always had a smile on his face. It was so evident that the Lord was with him and continuing to work in his life. I can’t WAIT to see what else God has in store for us. I know we came here to reach the Haitian people, but it seems to me that they are doing more of the reaching, which again, is just so amazing. I thank God for this opportunity and can’t wait to see what else he has in store for this mission!
