I have come to the realization that I haven’t come to change Haiti. I came so that Haiti could change me. It has only been a few days here at the mission, and God has used me more than I ever imagined! I never thought I would have the opportunity to hand out shoes to children, provide food for needy families, play trumpet and sing for the elderly, engage impoverished children, and hold orphaned Haitian infants. THe best part is, my trip is only about halfway over.
The largest impact that the people of Haiti–the children especially–have had on me is their joy! They are an intellectual and joyful people! Kids who are no more than three years old walk around, speak to me, and carry themselves with confidence. Educational programs in America and in more fortunate countries need to realize that there is an abundance of promise within the minds of the Haitian children. They are smart. They are kind. They are lovely. They have the potential to do great things. So…let them.
My dream for this nation is this–that it would shine in the darkness. If this nation can grasp how important they are, how much God loves them, and how much potential they have, think of how much bigger, brighter, and better the world can become! Their poverty has made me richer, their joy has increased my humility, their confidence has broken my insecurities, and their love has strengthened mine.
I love Haiti. I love these people. The Haitians are a precious and deserving people who, if given the correct and appropriate chances, can change the hardest of hearts and the arrogancy of the stubborn.
The time is now for Haiti to shine.
Are you willing to help?
Consider it.
It may just be the best decision you ever make.
